Storm chaser James Stovall weathers well with the Spark Driver™ app
Warranty administrator by day, independent delivery driver by night, and meteorologist just about anytime severe weather strikes, James Stovall does it all.
For the last 14 years, he has been building a career at an equipment company and now manages the warranties at ten of their branches, which keeps him very busy during the day. When his son showed an interest in anime, however, he wanted to find something extra after the nine to five to cover the cost of food and housing at conventions. He began delivering on another delivery platform until a neighbor told him that he was getting his groceries from Walmart delivered and there were opportunities for more drivers to deliver on the Spark Driver platform.
After being accepted onto the platform, he fell in love with driving on the Spark Driver app because he feels the earnings are more competitive and he finds the trips are a lot easier.
He said, “I like the way the platform is set up for shopping [and delivery] orders because it tells you exactly where in the store the items are at, which makes it a lot easier than shopping on other platforms. The simplicity of the Spark [Driver platform] is another reason why I like it the best.”
Now, nearly every evening and weekend he can be found driving around Hewitt, Texas, chatting with customers who happen to open the door when he delivers their items or cutting it up with the curbside associates about sports while they are loading orders.
His earnings are also stretching beyond just his son’s anime conventions. They have helped afford him the opportunity to buy a new car. His new vehicle has better gas mileage, which comes in handy for his storm-chasing hobby. He has a weather page called “James the weather guy” on Facebook that he covers the weather on.
“As a kid, my aunt had storm anxiety,” he recounts, “and she would head to the courthouse for shelter. Seeing how anxious the weather made her, I was thinking, ‘what if I could help with this and try to put her mind at ease. She needs someone to tell her what is going on, so she can not be so anxious.’”
While he never had formal meteorology training, he did intensive self-study and owns his own weather tracking applications and radar, which he compares to the quality of some weather channels. He does live broadcasts and does his best to inform locals of impending weather.
Assuming the weather stays calm, and no storms need chasing, James plans to go to bed early after all the turkey and trimmings on Thanksgiving to prepare for any and all Black Friday offers he may receive.
To other drivers preparing for the same, he encourages, “Keep your orders separate when you pick them up. And when delivering to an unfamiliar area, be smart and pay attention to your map. I like to carry a flashlight to help me ensure I’m at the correct location.”
We wish James and all of you drivers, a Happy Thanksgiving and happy delivering for those who choose to do so.
